This new RF lens offers far greater freedom of expression and allows users to switch seamlessly between taking still photos and movies. A 35mm lens offers a perspective very similar to the natural field of view of the human eye. With a large, f/1.4 aperture, this is the first in a line of single-focal-length lenses that Canon hopes will foster a new era in photography, enabling even more dramatic artistic expression.
The optical system includes two finely balanced aspherical lens elements to provide high image quality in every corner of the picture. The RF35mm f/1.4L VCM delivers image quality equivalent or superior to that of the EF35mm f/1.4L II USM. The use of two UD lenses helps to reduce color bleeding. By placing more lens elements toward the front of the unit, the lens also helps to suppress sagittal coma flare, which sometimes occurs when shooting with a fully open aperture.
Furthermore, the RF35mm f/1.4L VCM is the first Canon EF/RF lens to incorporate a Voice Coil Motor (VCM). The VCM is an actuator designed to handle heavier lenses. The electronic floating focus control and nano USM work in tandem to provide fast, smooth, and quiet focusing control for even a heavy, large-diameter lens. The mechanism drives each of the two focus lens groups independently, to suppress “breathing” (alterations in the angle-of-view from close-up to infinity). This facilitates stable composition when shooting video footage, and high image quality when shooting close-ups.
The control system features an iris ring to control the aperture when shooting movies. The compact design leverages the strengths of the EOS R system, reducing total weight by approximately 27% compared to the EF35mm f/1.4L II USM.
