XA15

Full HD ENG camera with HD-SDI terminals, 20x zoom and 5-axis image stabilization

A compact Full HD ENG camera that boasts a 20x zoom lens and 5-axis image stabilization, two SD card slots and 50P/60P recording in both AVCHD and MP4 formats, the XA15 is equipped with various features for added efficiency, such as support for both relay and simultaneous recording and the ability to simultaneously record video snippets in 3 Mbps mode for usage in fast-breaking news. It is also equipped with an HD-SDI terminal, the standard interface in broadcasting, so that not only can you simultaneously pipe footage directly to the broadcast van, but also output to an external recorder to make uncompressed video recordings.

The camera offers the imaging prowess of the Canon Full HD system, combining the excellent sensitivity of the CMOS sensor with the DIGIC DV 4 image processor for high image quality even in scenes with low illumination. With the ‘Highlight Priority’ and ‘Wide DR’ custom picture profiles in place, the recorded footage has more flexibility for minor image adjustments in post-production, ideal for scenes where achieving the ideal exposure is challenging. It is possible to record audio via two separate audio channels, each with the volume adjusted independently. This is a highly versatile camera that is great value for money, ideal for a wide range of purposes beyond news and reporting, such as shooting corporate promotional videos, weddings and other event coverage.

Features

20x optical zoom providing focal length approx. 26.8mm – 576mm (35mm equivalent)

Featuring a 20x optical zoom that covers focal lengths from 26.8mm (wide-angle end) to 576mm (telephoto end), the XA15 utilizes Hi-UD (Hi Index Ultra Low Dispersion) glass in its lens, the same found in Canon’s top-of-the-line camcorders, providing clear images with minimal chromatic aberration.
The large-diameter lens, which features an aperture of f/1.8 at its wide-angle end and f/2.8 at its telephoto end, when used in combination with the DIGIC DV 4 imaging platform, is capable of shooting footage with low noise even in scenes with little illumination. The 8-blade circular aperture diaphragm produces bokeh with excellent quality.

5-axis image stabilization

The XA15 features a 5-axis image stabilization method that combines a lens-shift optical system with electronic stabilization built into the camera body. With this, vertical, horizontal and axial rotation and camera movements in the yaw and pitch directions are corrected. If Dynamic mode is enabled, image stabilization takes place even when shooting while walking.

When shooting at the telephoto end, where camera shake is particularly likely to occur, Powered IS mode can be utilised, which is especially ideal for fixed-point shooting. Such a wide selection of image stabilization features provide solid support for Full HD shooting and the high-resolution imaging required.

A variety of recording modes; double SD card slots

The XA15 is not only capable of recording in Full HD 50P/60P, it also provides various recording formats to suit your applications, such as AVCHD format which provides excellent quality and recordability, and MP4, the widely accepted format employed for fast delivery online. The two SD card slots allow long duration recording through relay recording, as well as simultaneous recording for backup purposes.

The dual recording function makes it possible to record an AVCHD or MP4 recording in the main slot either while another recording or mirror recording, or 3 Mbps MP4 recording is simultaneously being recorded in the sub-slot - a powerful feature for producing video snippets for fast-breaking news. The camera’s HD-SDI terminal - a standard feature in broadcasting, not only lets you simultaneously relay the footage to the broadcasting van, but also to an external recorder to make uncompressed video recording for archival purposes.
