Two aspherical lens elements that are precisely balanced are part of the optical system, which offers excellent image quality throughout the entire image. The image quality produced by the RF35mm f/1.4L VCM is on par with or better than that of the EF35mm f/1.4L II USM. Colour bleeding is lessened when two UD lenses are used. Additionally, the lens helps suppress sagittal coma flare, which can occasionally happen when shooting with a fully open aperture. This is achieved by positioning more lens elements towards the front of the unit. 

Get ready to be amazed by the innovative features of the RF35mm f/1.4L VCM, the first Canon EF/RF lens to adopt a Voice Coil Motor (VCM)—this actuator is designed to support larger lenses. The electronic floating focus control and nano USM technology enable fast, quiet, and smooth focusing control, even for bulky, large-diameter lenses. The mechanism suppresses 'breathing' and independently drives each focus lens group, making it easier to capture video footage with a stable composition and close-ups with excellent image quality. 

The control system has an iris ring to adjust the aperture while filming. By utilising the advantages of the EOS R system, the compact design decreases the overall weight by roughly 27% compared to the EF35mm f/1.4L II USM.
